Message	The varying size if the tip does not increase thrust really. What it does is limit the speed of the exhaust to as close to the speed of sound but not exceeding it. If the exhaust exceeds to speed of sound then shock waves occur and that's not good. As the engine powers up the exhaust obviously increases in velocity, so the tips increase/decrease proportionatly to slow down/speed up the flow.
